Land Preservation

We recognize and understand the concerns shared by many regarding the future of pristine land in and around our community. As a Village, we believe in the importance of conservation and preserving the rural heritage that has shaped our community. We offer various avenues through which property owners can safeguard their land and maintain its natural integrity.

Easements
One option available to property owners is the establishment of environmental conservation easements or agricultural easements. These voluntary agreements can ensure that land remains dedicated to agriculture or conservation in perpetuity. We are here to assist property owners in navigating the process of establishing these easements and connecting them with relevant resources.

  • Madison Soil and Water Conservation District:  Works with local landowners to protect the exceptional water quality and wildlife of Big and Little Darby Creek State and National Scenic rivers.  Many instruments exist to conserve natural areas and manage increased runoff, including fee-simple sales, conservation easements and wetland restoration.  Contact the Madison SWCD to speak with them about these options and your goals for your property.
  • Local Agricultural Easement Purchase Program (LAEPP): Funding from the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) helps Madison County Commissioners purchase agricultural easements from willing landowners who wish to preserve their farm in perpetuity. Please click here for more information.
  • Ohio Department of Natural Resources - Scenic Rivers Program: ODNR-SRP is available to work with property owners for easements or fee simple acquisition. Please contact Heather Doherty by calling 740-258-0567 or email.

Property Donation
In addition, we welcome property owners who are interested in donating their land to the Village for parkland purposes. By donating property, property owners can contribute to the expansion of green spaces and recreational areas that benefit our entire community. We are happy to work closely with potential donors to discuss the details and ensure that their intentions for the land are respected and implemented.

Annexation
For property owners who are willing to voluntarily annex into the Village, we offer the opportunity to enact special zoning restrictions. This ensures that the land remains free from development, or is developed in an acceptable fashion. We are available to provide guidance and assistance throughout the annexation process, addressing any concerns or questions that may arise.

If you are a property owner interested in exploring any of these options or have questions regarding land protection, conservation easements, parkland donations, or annexation, please reach out to us.
